A Discussion with Black Violin!

For the 2020 Shalala MusicReach Summer Institute, Black Violin made a virtual appearance to discuss their career in entrepreneurship with students. 

Black Violin is an American hip hop duo from South Florida. Two classically trained string instrumentalists Kev Marcus, plays the violin, and Wil B., plays the viola. The duo was founded in 2004. The members of Black Violin first met in Ft. Lauderdale, and played together in the orchestra at the Dillard High School of the Performing Arts.

Protest and Praise

Melvin L. Butler is an Associate Professor in the Department of Musicology at the Frost School of Music. He specializes in music and religion in Haitian, Jamaican, and African American communities. Dr. Butler’s research explores the cultural politics of musical performance, national identity, and extraordinary experience. He also examines the discourses of cultural authenticity and spiritual power that inflect congregational practice. In this video, Dr. Butler discusses the impact of African American Gospel Music has had on

contemporary music styles. 

Performance Anxiety

Scott Flavin and Margaret Donaghue Flavin, both Professors at the Frost School of Music, present a masterclass on performance anxiety. Scott Flavin holds several important positions as a conductor at the Frost School, including Resident Conductor with The Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra and Music Director of the Miami Mozarteum Orchestra

Dr. Margaret Donaghue has performed as chamber musician and soloist in more than a dozen countries across three continents. She has performed in major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space and more!
